Car Roof Could Power A Car

The news comes after researchers from Imperial College London have created a prototype model of the new battery in a three-year, £2 million project.

The material created by the team can store and discharge electrical current but is also lightweight enough to be used in cars.

Dr Emile Greenhalgh, part of the research team from the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College, said: "We think the car of the future could be drawing power from its roof, its bonnet or even the door, thanks to our new composite material."

She added that in-car devices like sat navs could also be powered by the new battery, saying it is a really exciting development.

The material could help with the growth of hybrid cars in the future, as it would reduce the vehicle's weight by 15 per cent, leading to less power being needed to drive it forward.
