The car alarm was found to be the "most irritating piece of technology ever invented", and topped even the dreaded computer egg timer that tells you that your computer is "not responding".

 

Computers in general came third in a poll of 5,000 people, while speed cameras were fourth.

 

"Car alarms can be the bane of many people's lives - waking them up, or stopping them from nodding off at night", says a spokesman for mobile phone recycling site www.PhonePiggyBank.com.

 

"But everyone dreads seeing the egg timer pop onto their PC screen, it normally means you're in for a long wait.

 

"No matter how much they irritate us, they are all designed to make our lives easier in some way, however frustrating they are", they added.
